Niaouli is a tree in the Myrtaceae family, which also includes the clove tree and myrtle. Far behind its gigantic cousins, the eucalyptuses, its tortuous shape can grow as high as 20 meters. Its common names include the “paperbark” tree, as the niaouli has a pale, soft bark that peels off in thick layers. Niaouli can be used for reducing tension headaches and aiding damaged skin from situations of acne, infections, abrasions, cuts and burns. It has positive aroma-therapeutic effects as an immune stimulant and also said to be highly effective with relieving respiratory congestion. Niaouli is an excellent essential oil for cold and flu season.
