Cranesbill contains tannins, gallic acid, pectin, starch and resin. It is used as an astringent and as antiseptic due to its high tannin content. Native Americans have traditionally used this herb to treat stomach ailments. Today, it is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, ulcers, colitis, hemorrhoids and dysentery. It is also used as a compress for swollen feet and to stop bleeding wounds.
